The past week or so I’ve been doing a dog and cat themed storytime. If there’s time, at the end, we sing this song, while pretending to pet an imaginary cat:
Soft kitty, warm kitty,
Little ball of fur,
Happy kitty, sleepy kitty,
Purr, purr, purr.
I learned this song recently from a fellow librarian. It was completely new to me, and I thought the kids would really enjoy it! The first time I sang it with the kids, a teacher in the back of the room looked at me in surprise. I have subsequently had at least four other teachers crack up as soon as I started singing. Fortunately, the first teacher told me why, so I know to expect it now.
Here’s why this song is so hilarious to the teachers:
I just want to point out that 1) I don’t watch that show (or much tv at all), and 2) THE SONG PREDATES THE SHOW! I have it on good authority — namely the librarian who taught it to me — as she’s been singing it in storytime for years. Plus, the tune she taught me is a little different.
But boy, is it funny to start singing a quiet, lullaby-like song and have teachers burst into laughter. Kinda defeats the purpose of putting our kitty cats to sleep, though.
What were the original lyrics that you were taught? The lyrics from the Big Bang Theory are not the ones that I remember.
When I was little my mom always played all the old Tom Glazer “Music For 1s & 2s” type albums, and there was a song on there like this that I used to sing (kind of the same tune):
Nice kitty, nice kitty, let me touch your fur, purr kitty, purr kitty, purr, purr, purr.
I *love* Big Bang Theory, so when that song came on in the episode I kind of had a little freak out about it! I used the BBT version in a storytime once though, and the parents got a kick out of it! 🙂
Oh that’s too funny! I’ve sung this song in storytime before too. Now it’s all ruined for me though….
