Things I Never Thought I’d Say In Storytime: Pt. 2

7 Apr

To a CHILD:

“Put your cellphone away. We’re not taking calls during storytime.”

[Okay, I admit, it looked like an old one with no battery. But she had it in her pocket and felt compelled to take it out and pretend to take a call during stories.]

I have had to shush my teachers on occasion. But this was the first time I’ve ever had to tell a CHILD to put away her cellphone! 🙂

I have a cell phone song I sing:

I went to the storytime with my mom,
But she left her cellphone on.
The cellphone rang and she took the call.
Now we’re not allowed back in at all.

Then I have the kids take out their pretend cellphones to turn them off and put them back in their pockets. I had had adults answer cellphone calls during my storytime and step over children on the way out or just keep chatting. The rudeness of people amazes me.
I also have a two-sided sign I can hold up if I’m in the middle of storytime and don’t want to stop everything. It says “Please model good listening” and has two people chatting with the red circle and the line through it on one side and the cellphone with the red circle and the line through it on the other side.
For a while I had a yellow caution sign up that read: Caution! Cellphone Eating Tiger. [http://www.flickr.com/photos/marfita/3029737937/ ] We’re in a new library now and aren’t allowed to put anything on the walls.

    That is a new one!

I’ve just started a story time blog, and I’ve added your blog to my recommended reading list.
