Okay, not really a book trailer today, but a story.
True confession: I have mixed feelings about Robert Munsch. Some of his stories are great fun, like Stephanie’s Ponytail and Paper Bag Princess, but some I just CANNOT abide, like Love You Forever (*shudder*). Mortimer, though, definitely falls into the former category. I first heard Mortimer’s story told by one of my first librarian mentors, Chad Quartuccio, a veteran of children’s services at NYPL on Staten Island. For quite a while I didn’t even realize it was a book – Chad tells it so well. In fact, I think Chad had a big influence on how I tell stories today – the way I sing Old Black Fly is exactly the way he did it.
Here, Robert Munsch himself tells Mortimer’s story, complete with “clang clangs” and stair-stomps. I haven’t told this story in a while, but after hearing this, I think I’ going to have to put it back in the rotation. I think it would make a great flannelboard, too, so look for it as an upcoming Flannel Friday!
I can’t tell you the name of the tune. It’s kinda bluesy. Maybe I’ll just have to video it.
Thanks for the reminder about this great story, it’s been years since I looked at this one. Can’t wait to see the ff! How do you sing Old Black Fly? I use the tune from ‘Joshua fought the Battle of Jericho’.
