Flannel Friday: 5 Little Snowmen

Long time no post, y’all! Sorry for that. I hope to be fully back WITH A VENGEANCE soon. Okay, maybe not with a or any vengeance.

I didn’t have time to make these pieces out of felt, so I made them in MS Word using the shape drawing feature. The sun is clipart.

The rhyme I used with them goes like this (we also did the actions):

5 little snowmen standing in a row (5 fingers)

each with a hat and a bright red bow (hand on head, two hands pull bow)

Out came the sun and it shone all day (hands over head in circle shape)

And 1 little snowman melted away (wiggle fingers down to ground)

4 little snowmen… etc.

As each snowman melted, I replaced them with a melted version:

At the end, we’re left with nothing but a row of puddles:

Flannel Friday: 5 Little Cookies

A quick-and-easy flannel Friday for y’all today, because that’s all I had time for. I made cookies for this same rhyme a while ago, but decided I don’t like them anymore. These took me about 15 minutes yesterday – just 5 circles of tan felt, with puffy paint “icing” (I like the way it looks more like icing than felt, but you can certainly do that too).

And here’s the rhyme:

5 little cookies, with frosting galore,

Mother ate the white one, and then there were 4.

4 little cookies, 2 and 2 you see,

Father ate the green one, and then there were 3.

3 little cookies, but before I knew,

Sister ate the yellow one, and then there were 2.

2 little cookies, oh what fun!

Brother ate the brown one, and then there was 1.

1 little cookie. Watch me run!

I ate the red one, and then there were NONE!

So – we have colors, we have counting, and we have cookies. 3 of my favorite things. I’ll be breaking out the cookie-related stories this month, as well as using one of my favorite chants, “Who Stole the Cookies from the Cookie Jar!” for a good sweet-tooth storytime.

Flannel Friday: Counting Sheep

In the fall I always do a bedtime-themed storytime. It just feels like the right time of year to be thinking about long winter naps, so I break out the cozy (and silly and crazy and chaotic) stories about going to sleep. One book that I think is particularly gorgeous (and works great with my bilingual crew) is Sarah Weeks’ Counting Ovejas, illustrated by David Diaz. Bilingual text plus gorgeous, multi-colored sheep is a win in my book.

I decided to make a flannel board of it. However, I realized that as each sheep comes and goes on the same page, it would be like “drive-by flanneling.” None of the sheep stay on the page very long. Also, for the higher numbers, I’d be making multiples: 10, TEN! yellow sheep. So, the flannelboard very quickly morphed into something like my monster guessing game flannel.

The kids count with me as we put each one on the board. Then, I ask them “what color is sheep number 6?” So they’ve got to recognize the number, and then put the color with it. The teachers actually really liked this idea and I gave my pattern to a couple so they could recreate the activity.

After identifying all the colors, I turn the board around and take one off (no peeking!). The kids then have to tell me which color, or number, or both, is missing. They had fun!

Also: when I asked the kids what animal some people count when they can’t fall asleep, one young lady said: “I want to count zebras!” Hmmm…

Flannel Friday: Pretty Ladybug

I was looking for something new to add to my bug storytime when I found Mollie Kay’s Pretty Ladybug flannel on Pinterest. Perfect!

Ladybug looks great, but is missing something – spots! We add each one as well as its corresponding number:

After each one, we sing (supposed to be to the tune of “The Muffin Man” but I couldn’t remember that and used “Johnny Works With 1 Hammer”; “London Bridges” would also work):

Ladybug has 1 black spot,

1 black spot, 1 black spot;

Ladybug has 1 black spot,

pretty ladybug!

Eventually pretty ladybug has 6 lovely spots!

The kids I tried it on today really liked it – especially because the song is simple enough for them to learn quickly and join in easily. Thanks, Mollie Kay for this wonderful idea!

The ladybug is all felt and the numbers are painted on felt squares.

Flannel Friday: 5 Hungry Ants

I’ve posted this one before, as part of my food storytime, but that was long before Flannel Friday started so I thought I would share it again! It’s one of my preschoolers’ favorites, especially since after every sneeze I toss the ant over my shoulder.

Mmmm....cake...

We start by counting the ants, and then, one by one, they march into the food:

5 hungry ants,

marching in a line,

came upon a picnic

where they could dine.

They marched into the salad,

they marched into the cake,

they marched into the pepper….

Uh oh, that was a mistake!

AHHHH-CHOOO!

4 hungry ants….etc….

The ants are ready for their close up.

I like to add words to my flannel pieces where possible, and point out the word as I’m saying it. I have asked the kids what words they think are on the cake, and they can usually guess correctly. Also, this is a vocabulary builder – we talk about what the word “dine” means (not to be mistaken for DIE, which the kids often think I’ve said. It’s good to clarify. Dine is a fancy word for eat! Like “dining room!”)

Flannel Friday: Flannelboards Inspired by Others

Hi all! No new flannels for you today; I wanted, instead, to share my excitement with all the wonderful bloggers/librarians who have joined in Mel’s Flannel Friday endeavor and have inspired me greatly! Here are MY version of some of their friday flannels:

Both Anne and Sharon have a version of Flip Flap Jack, and it’s a great fun song! I really liked how Sharon’s co-worker used pictures of real food, so I replicated that:

My clerk and I decided he needed a nose, so he has a cherry nose. Each item is covered in clear contact paper, with a piece of double-stick tape on the back, and we covered a piece of construction paper with contact paper. The food sticks very nicely to that – and can be easily removed!

I got “Little Mouse” from Anne also. I had heard the rhyme before, but Anne’s post is what finally motivated me to make it! My kids LOVE these kinds of guessing games. It also inspired me to create this color spinner for big crowds.

Ahhh...flourescent lighting gives it such a lovely glow, doesn't it?

I have loved these owls from the moment Katie posted them and have been itching to make them! The original idea, though, comes from Leah at Sunflower Storytime (where the template lives!) Although I wont be doing my bird-themed storytime for a few months, I finally made them last week and have them ready to go.

Hooo!

I lucked out in that a co-worker who plans our teen programs happened to have a bag of colored feathers, so mine got a little addition. They’re so cute, and I love how colorful they are!  Storytime Moxie also created a version.

Flannel Friday: Mouse Count/Cuenta de Ratón

Today’s Flannel Friday idea comes from Making Learning Fun.

I made a jar and 10 mice of various colors. After reading Ellen Stoll Walsh’s Mouse Count, we sing this rhyme, to the tune of “Frere Jacques”:

Mouse count, mouse count

Mouse count, mouse count

Count with me, count with me

How many mice, how many mice

Do you see? Do you see?*

I DID have 10 mice. Where did #10 go?

We count the mice. I take one or more away and then we recite the rhyme and count again. This can be done an endless number of times!

To change things up, and to promote vocabulary, we also count how many mice are INSIDE (adentro) the jar, and how many mice are OUTSIDE (afuera). I may also ask the kids to name the specific colors inside or outside.

We also do the same with UPSIDE DOWN (cabeza abajo) and RIGHT SIDE UP:

This would work well for a Mice, Colors, or Counting-themed storytime.
